As an LGBTQIA+ clinician, or someone working with this population...
- Do you frequently feel misunderstood by your supervisor?
- Have you ever felt like your supervisor doesn't understand who you are or what it means to be LGBTQIA+? I'm not just talking about the occasional awkward moment when they ask which of your male couple is like “the wife”.
- Do you feel your supervisor understands you, and your GSRD clients? Do you find yourself feeling protective of their judgements of your client’s lives as they view them through their cisgender, heteronormative or mononormative lenses?
- Are you looking for someone with expert knowledge of LGBTQIA+ mental health or sexual issues?
- Are you interested in understanding more about how to improve your work as a therapist working with GSRD clients?
- Are you interested in understanding more about how to improve your work as a therapist working with GSRD clients?
- Do you worry about not knowing the current language around LGBTQIA+ issues?
- Are you confident in making your practice inclusive and welcoming to GSRD clients?
I have worked as a Psychotherapist for 40 years with LGBTIQA+ clients. Nowadays, I am focussing on providing specialist clinical supervision to therapists working with Gender, Sex and Relationship Diverse (GSRD) clients. I am accredited by the National Council of Integrative Psychotherapists.
LGBTIQA+ people often experience significant minority stress factors in their lives, which can result in higher rates of anxiety, depression and thoughts of suicide. LGBTIQA+ people can also have complex trauma histories due to discrimination, abuse and/or rejection from family, friends, peers and society in general.
Through my work as a clinical supervisor, I aim to support therapists of all genders, sexualities, and theoretical modalities in understanding the unique needs of LGBTIQA+ clients and to provide a space for exploring the challenges and complexities that might arise when working with this population. My hope is that by offering specialist clinical supervision, therapists will be better equipped to provide informed and sensitive care to LGBTIQA+ clients.
